1 year in Canada, already!

We landed in Toronto on the 26th September, 2008… Exactly one year ago. After a very long flight from Gatwick to Pearson we finally landed in this big, unknown city and all we had was a couple of suitcases and a few nights booked at the EconoLodge (in a dodgy part of town, to add to the excitement).

We are quite proud of what we’ve achieved in the space of 12 months and hope that our second year here will be as productive as the last one (but a bit less stressful, please!). We did the illustration above for fun, to list a few of the things we’ve achieved since we live in Toronto.

Fido & Wino

I am fairly sure the meaning of life lies in playing with dogs and drinking wine. If I'm wrong... ah, I'm pretty sure that's right...

Homophobia

I've recently started using Twitter as a social networking tool to get more readers for my blog. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a diehard Facebook junkie, so I thought that it would be similar. It is not. I heard a saying (on Twitter) something to the effect that Facebook is for communicating with people that you used to know and Twitter is to communicate with people you might want to get to know.

Love Yourself and Other People Will Love You, Too!

The key to successful interpersonal relationships is having a good relationship with yourself. For many people though, possessing the right amount of self-love is an extremely difficult task. We all know individuals that have large egos and appear very self-confident. These people seem to breeze through life with few barriers or issues. On the other side of the spectrum, there are what I call the "Eeyores" of the world. You know, the sad, little gray donkey from the Winnie-the-Pooh stories that can never keep track of his tail.

Ramblings of an Insane Shopper

Hello Readers! Sorry it's been so long since my last blog, but whew, I've been busy! You know how it is, appointments, sick husband, spring break, working on other projects, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, here I am to fulfill everyone's life with my stories of relationships. Did you detect the sarcasm?

Relationships in the World of IM

Before I discuss relationships, I need to give you some background information about myself. From the age of about six to almost fourteen, I lived in a very small, remote mining community in northwestern Ontario. Families moved in and out of the community at an alarming rate, because most employment was dependent on how well the mine was doing. Also, many people did not stay long due to the remoteness of the area. This was the 1970s and 80s, before the internet and the following communications explosion.

The Human Condition

It was about a week or so after I had decided to start blogging and was thinking about what focus to take, how often to blog and so forth, when I mentioned to my older daughter that I was starting a blog. Her initial reaction was the same disdainful look that she gave my husband when he told her that he was setting up a website. Any parent of a child over the age of ten knows the look: the contemptuous sneer of a person who knows absolutely everything, combined with an oh-my-god-you-are-so-embarrassing stare.
